What is Violence/Abuse?

There are many forms of violence, including physical, sexual, emotional and financial abuse.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is a “Non-Accidental” use of force that results in bodily injury, pain, or impairment of another person.

Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity with the use of force, making threats or taking advantage of victims who are not able to provide consent.

Emotional or Psychological Abuse

Emotional or psychological abuse is a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another person to behaviour that may result in psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic depression. This involves a person’s attempts to frighten, control, or isolate you.  It is the abuser’s words and actions, as well as their persistent behaviour.

Financial Abuse

Financial abuse involves controlling a victim’s ability to acquire, use and maintain financial resources.  Those who are victimized financially may be prevented from working.  They also may have their own money restricted or stolen by the abuser and rarely do they have complete access to money and other resources.

Harassment

Harassment is a form of discrimination.  It includes any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you.  Generally, harassment is a behaviour that persists over time. Serious one-time incidents can also sometimes be considered as harassment.

Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence is any form of violence that is based on an individual’s gender, gender expression or gender identity and is intended to control, and harm the individual. Gender-based violence can affect anyone.
